One Brighton is heralded as an exemplar sustainable development at this year’s Construction Expo 2008, which showcased what is best about the UK’s construction sector.
Construction Expo 2008 was held at The Chatham Dockyard on Wednesday September 24th, where Pete Halsall, Managing Director of BioRegional Quintain - which is delivering the UK’s most environmentally advanced residential development, One Brighton, in partnership with Crest Nicholson - gave a talk on the importance of sustainable construction and the methods and technologies being employed at One Brighton.
Pete was joined by Crest Nicholson Chief Executive Stephen Stone, who unveiled the latest plans for Rochester Riverside, a 74 acre (32 ha) brownfield site where outline planning permission has been granted for a major new mixed use community. This will include up to 2,000 new mixed tenure homes and, together with joint venture partner BioRegional Quintain Ltd, Crest Nicholson has been selected as the preferred developer for the first 600 homes on this flagship regeneration site. Many of the methods, innovations and sustainable technologies employed at One Brighton will also be used in the delivery of this scheme.
Commenting on the event and the future of the industry Pete Halsall said: “We wholeheartedly support this conference and it provides a good opportunity to take a sober view of the industry at this point. We believe that investment in training, new technologies and new working methods will be essential to avoid a post credit crunch - ’skills crisis’ - as market demand picks up; at One Brighton, as with all our forthcoming developments, we are committed to providing the training and skills we feel are essential to promote sustainable construction which we believe is an essential progression.”
Stephen discussed various aspects of the development, including the skills that are needed to deliver large scale residential projects of this nature, focusing on the work that Crest Nicholson has been undertaking with North Kent Construction Skills in order to bring about positive training and learning opportunities for the local community.
Describing Rochester Riverside, Stephen commented: “Rochester Riverside is a major development that underpins the Government’s strategic growth plans in the Thames Gateway. It will bring significant visual and economic benefits to the area and, by creating a vibrant and highly sustainable new community for Medway, Rochester Riverside is set to become one of North Kent’s most important landmark projects.”
