The construction staff at One Brighton have gone green! The site workers at the UK’s most environmentally advanced residential development now have access to a canteen that serves meals that adhere to the scheme’s ground-breaking sustainability principles, One Planet Living.
Earlier in the year development partners BioRegional Quintain and Crest Nicholson, together with Denne Construction launched a campaign to find a caterer who would embrace the One Planet Living principles and providehealthy, local, organic and ex citing meals to the staff at the One Brighton construction site. Wendy Armitage was selected as the Canteen Operator and for the last three weeks site workers at the development have been eating better food in their site Café than diners receive in many of
Brighton’s top restaurants. The concept behind the One Planet Living Canteen is to offer healthy and
affordable meals to workers, to reduce the environmental impact of the food offered and to promote the local economy by partnering with local farmers and suppliers. Wendy Armitage followed the One Planet Living Canteen call and joined the team to deliver this exciting development.
Wendy has many years experience within the catering business; she worked with Care Co-ops managing the 20/20 café in Brighton and before that she ran the kitchen at The Duke of Norfolk in Brighton, where she got excellent reviews from The Argus Food Guide. Within her new role at the One Planet Living Canteen she will source as much of the ingredients as possible from within Sussex including the community farm at Stanmer Park.
Wendy commented on the challenge ahead: “I am truly excited by this, and hope to make a difference to these guys. Its great fun here and enjoyable to see people changing their eating habits for the better” The lunchtime menu gives a host of options and Pete Halsall, Managing Director of BioRegional Quintain decided that the best test would be a lunch meeting in the café. “One Planet Living is about embracing a sustainable lifestyle as well as an ‘eco-friendly’ home. We felt that it was important
that everyone involved in the delivery of this landmark project embraces the very ethos that sets it apart. Whilst One Brighton is an exemplar UK development, it is very much a Brighton project and aims to build the local economy through supporting local businesses. A large portion of the raw
ingredients for the canteen are being locally sourced and the proof of the quality is in the tasting.”
He continues: “We have received really good feedback from the workers on site; we want our workers to be happy and productive and we feel that this menu will really help with that goal. Fantastic work by Wendy, Denne and our guys to get this set up.”
Janice Al Baden, Sustainability Co-ordinator for Denne Construction at One Brighton site explained the impact the canteen has already had on the site staff: “The canteen is proving really popular. Some were unconvinced about getting the workforce buying in to this, but there has never been such a demand for healthy food from the site canteen. Last Wednesday the Canteen sold out of Fish Pie…one young worker, who has tended to avoid eating fish has now asked Wendy to make some pies for him to take home.”
When complete, One Brighton will comprise 172 studio, one and two bedroom stylish apartments along with a range of onsite facilities that promote sustainability.
In line with the homes, the Canteen benefits from features such as recycling bins, a composting bin, herb planters and a bulletin-board with information on local eco-products and services. Prices for apartments at One Brighton start from £132,500 for a studio apartment, £200,000 for a one bedroom apartment and £285,000 for a two bedroom apartment.
