AMBITIOUS plans for a £200m development at Middlehaven have been given the
go ahead by Middlesbrough Council planners.
Developer BioRegional Quintain can now move closer to bringing the spectacular plans for the UK’s biggest zero carbon scheme to life. After being selected by Tees Valley Regeneration to take forward the Will Alsop masterplan for the site BioRegional Quintain submitted a scheme for the almost
1 million sq ft of mixed use development. The outline plans give details of the public areas, including retail and leisure pavilions and event squares to create a sustainable community and improved
links to Middlesbrough town centre.
Pete Halsall, managing director of BioRegional Quintain said: “Our proposals for Middlehaven are truly innovative and ground-breaking and it is great to have the support of Middlesbrough Council.
“Our next move will be to submit detailed planning applications for the first two buildings – and it won’t be too long before we are able to offer people the chance to be among the first to live at Middlehaven.
“If the interest, support and excitement we have encountered so far are anything to go by we expect this venture to be a great success.”
Chief executive of Tees Valley Regeneration Joe Docherty, said: “This is yet another step towards the delivery of this fantastic, award-winning scheme at Middlehaven.
“In a few years time the landscape there will be unrecognisable. The first tenants have signed up for office space at Terrace Hill’s Manhattan Gate; the Middlesbrough College building is visibly growing before our eyes and as soon as next year we could have residents adding to the vibrancy. Middlehaven will be an example of regeneration at its best and I can’t wait to see it grow.
” Elected Mayor of Middlesbrough Ray Mallon welcomed the latest step in the planning process for Middlehaven. “This is a fantastic application which shows a far-reaching vision for the future of
the town. Middlehaven has been on the drawing board for some 25 years, but now it is finally becoming a reality. “We have a top class developer in BioRegional Quintain and what they are proposing is almost a new start for the town as a whole. It will transform Middlesbrough as a destination and I’m delighted that the scheme is moving forward,” he said.
Steve Gawthorpe, area director of English Partnerships the government’s regeneration agency, said: “This is excellent news for local people in Middlesbrough. The planning application marks the beginning of a new community on the Middlehaven site that will have not only excellent design but
also the highest levels of sustainability.” John Holmes, director of regeneration at One NorthEast said: “Middlehaven isgaining a reputation as a world-class development on the international stage.
The recent MIPIM exhibition saw real interest in what is happening in Middlesbrough and the planning application is an important step towards our long-term goal of attracting major investment into the town. “The regeneration of the Tees Valley is building a real head of steam with today’s announcement being matched by investment at key strategic sites including Durham Tees Valley Airport, Hartlepool’s Victoria Harbour, Central Park in Darlington and Stockton’s North Shore.”
