Crest Nicholson and BioRegional Quintain Announce One Planet Living Sustainable Community Date of issue: 22nd February 2007 Joint developers Crest Nicholson (South East) Ltd and BioRegional Quintain announce that they have been granted planning permission for a sustainable community in the centre of Brighton. Designed to be the most environmentally advanced development in the UK, the Brighton One Planet Living Community will occupy a derelict site on New England Street, part of the New England Quarter, close to Brighton train station.
The Brighton design has been developed in accordance with the 10 ‘One Planet Living’ principles in order to provide a comprehensive and lifestyle orientated approach to sustainability, by making it easy, attractive and affordable to live sustainably. A key aspect of One Planet Living is to achieve zero carbon emissions, as well as to provide a zero waste plan, use sustainable materials, implement
sustainable transport solutions and apply measures to support local and sustainable food and wildlife. It will also include a community centre that will house a number of charitable organisations and provide a resource for local people to use.
Construction of the 172 apartments, including 54 units of affordable housing, is due to commence in August 2007, with the first properties going on sale later this year. The one, two and three bedroom apartments also include a number of ‘eco-studios’ which provide private affordable housing to the local market and will benefit fromacces s to community space and the community centre.

The zero carbon development will include an energy efficient on-site communal woodchip biomass boiler, supplied from local wood waste that currently goes to landfill, and operated by a community owned energy service company (ESCO). The scheme will include eight on-site roof mounted wind turbines and an array of photovoltaic panels. As part of the local and sustainable food strategy, residents will be able to grow their own food on-site. These opportunities include roof top automatically-irrigated mini allotment areas, six roof gardens and integrated planters, on balconies, suitable for growing selected edible plants. Links will be established with local providers and
farms so that seasonal organic produce can be supplied to the residents.

Steve Jones, Managing Director, Crest Nicholson South East (Ltd) comments: “Zero carbon schemes are an essential part of the future of property development and we are very proud, along with BioRegional Quintain, to be setting the benchmark for future similar developments. The scheme combines our residential expertise with BioRegional Quintain’s knowledge of sustainable developments. Together, we believe, we have created a development that not only features striking contemporary
architecture, but one which is able to play a major part in combating climate change.”
Pete Halsall, Managing Director, BioRegional Quintain, said: “We are delighted that we can now get started on this fantastic development. The design has evolved following the participation of local people in the process, and it is all the better for it.
We are confident that our residents will find it easy, attractive and affordable to live sustainably in this development.” New England Quarter will be the first One Planet Living and zero carbon development
to be completed by Crest Nicholson and BioRegional Quintain. This is the second major development to be announced by the joint venture which, within the last two weeks, was confirmed by the London Development Agency as having won the contract to develop the One Gallions residential development, the Mayor of London’s zero carbon exemplar scheme, in London’s Royal Docks, Crest Nicholson and BioRegional Quintain Announce Sustainable Community…
